Posted : admin On 30.01.2020Hi Philip: If this is a bug, it's a new one. Office can use everything Unicode except those containing Adobe Type 1 (PostScript) glyphs. So any fonts you can find with those specs are fine.
Anything that's not coded in Unicode; and anything with Type 1 outlines, no go. I suggest you try to find out what kind of glyph outlines you have there. The 'TTC' (True Type Collaction) part is fine, but what is inside that collection? After installing the fonts, the English lettering of the font will appear in document, but the Japanese will not. The font for all Japanese scripts will revert back to MS 明朝 (MS Mincho), which I am guessing is somehow designated to be the default Japanese font. This problem happens in Word and PowerPoint, but not in Excel. ・ I can paste a cell from Excel into Word and font type stays intact, ・ But if I paste the text from Excel, the text reverts back to MS 明朝. I have never experienced the problem using any OpenOffice programs on any Mac OS. Nor have I experienced the problem on any Windows machine (I work on two) in any software. And none of them have anything to do with using 3rd party fonts.
Or built in fonts for that matter. And MS need to stop using 'we don't support 3rd party fonts' as an excuse not to fix it. I completely agree.
To be clear, this is not a problem with supporting some special feature for users of an English OS that are using Japanese. It is a problem for all Japanese users of MS Word and PowerPoint, including users like me on a computer sold in Japan with the Japanese OS pre-installed. By Japanese users, this can only be perceived as a bug that unintentionally prevents MS Word and PowerPoint users from using properly installed 3-party fonts. Can you imagine if the only fonts available for the English language on MS Word were ones that came installed with MS Word. That's essentially what's happening with Japanese fonts.
We can use any 3-party Japanese fonts in OpenOffice without a problem. I am now making documents mostly in OpenOffice because of this. I want to continue using MS Word but am being forced away from it, and you will see this happening in the Japanese user community if you check out online user groups, in Japanese, of course. That MS needs to stop using the 'we don't support 3rd party fonts' excuse is pretty much a universal sentiment. Please relay the message and provide the support we need! I don't recall Microsoft ever saying 'we don't support 3rd party fonts.'
Do you have a source for that information? Based on the conversation here, it does indeed seem to be a bug. To make Microsoft aware of the problem use the Help menu in Word and choose the Send Feedback option. Reports here don't reach anyone at Microsoft, but every submission using the feedback form is read by Microsoft.
