Layout a Custom Letterhead Step 1: Start a New Illustrator Doc Go to Adobe Illustrator, hit Command+N or select FileNew. From the New Document window, select Print from the top row of template options, then select Letter from the template choices. For this letterhead, we’ll set the top header area to 1.5″ inches in height. The sides the bottom footer area will come in to 1″ inch each.

This gives us plenty of room to stay away from the edges, which creates an open and clean look, helping your letterhead look nice and pro. Tip: Using simple, whole-number measurements also help when using this as a template in a word processing app. You can use the saved image of this as a background, then adjust your margins in the program you want to use. That way, the actual copy of your letter stay within the bounds created by the design and everything adheres to an intentional, well constructed grid. Step 4: Add Your Logo, Header, and Footer Information If you have a logo or branding elements, drag them into the Illustrator doc (they just need to be a common file type for images, like.jpg or.eps.) Tip: Place logos a little smaller than you would assume is good. If you need to size up, no biggie, Illustrator links to files so you won’t need to re-import. Having a big loud logo on a letterhead is distracting and can be seen as amateurish.

I dragged in a generic logo I made, positioned in the lower corner of the header, then added a rule in the same brown as the logo ( that’s branding!), further delineating the header section from the body. To make graphic rules, hit “ ”, or choose the Line Segment tool from the tools palette.

Select a start point, click while holding Shift and dragging to the end point, and release. This ensures a straight line. I added a rule in the same color and thickness at the bottom. This sits on the horizontal rule and goes to the rules at the 1″ and 7.5″ marks. Beneath that, I added company contact info: web address, phone, and physical address. Social information can be on the website, so it’s not necessary to clutter the footer. But, if there is no website, obviously add your social channels.

Again, you can use smaller than normal text here in the footer. In this example, I have set Helvetica Light at 8 pt.

Any bigger, I feel, takes away from the copy contained in the letter. Design Your Letterhead for Free Don’t have an Adobe subscription?

Add another to the bottom by choosing the line from the palette again, then moving and adjusting the length. Select both to change to a green color that compliments the leaf in the logo. On the right side, you can change the width and color of the lines in the Stroke section.

Step 3: Download and Save Once you’re happy with your layout, hit the Download button at the top of the window. At 300 DPI you can save a JPG or PDF for the most versatile file placement and usage, and it will be good quality for printing.
