I read online what to do and saw that the general way to downgrade was to edit the “/etc.defaults/VERSION” file with data from the.pat file that it should “think” it has installed. So I went to grab the 3202 version as dimmer suggested and copied everything over from the VERSION file, inside the 3202.pat file.

It worked, the united showed it was version 3202 that was installed. Next I tried to use system update and install the 3202 version on my unit that at this point, is running 5967 version of DSM. I wouldn’t update as it was not a newer version and the automatic upgrade failed for the same reason. So I thought, what If I softmod with an even older version and tried to upgrade from that to the 3202 release. I downloaded the release 2668.pat file. Extracted the file with 7-zip and grabbed the info from the VERSION file. Replaced the VERSION file on my DS with release 5967 running.

Went to system update and saw it believed it was running 2668 release. Did a manual update with the 3202.pat release and success! The unit started flashing itself with the 3202 release! Unfortunately this messes up the passwords on the system so that will need to be reset.

Currently I am awaiting a family member to help me with the reset button procedure so I can gain access with the Synology assistant. Will update this post when I have further development. UPDATE2: SUCCESS! I have managed to install the very latest DSM on my DS410j box!

I used the advice from dimmer and downgraded my Synology to an older version and described above. Then I got a family member to do a single beep reset, so the network and admin password is reset on the device, to regain control. At this point, the device have been downgraded with files from the 3202 release and it thinks it’s a DS411j.

Now the fun part started, upgrading using the auto update function. I have taken screenshots throughout the process, showing the current release installed and the release ready. I hope it’s okay, that I link the pictures in this comment, as posing the pictures will take up a lot of space. After the password reset, I started updating and it was going from release DSM 4.2-3202 to DSM 4.3-3827.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a screenshot from this update, but I did take one from DSM 4.3-3827 to DSM 5.0-4528. It updated without problems and the next update should take it from DSM 5.0-4528 to DSM 6.0-8754. But it failed, telling me I needed to install DSM 5.2-5565 first. So I downloaded the DSM 5.2-5565 release file and did a manual update. It worked, so I continued with auto updating from release DSM 5.2-5565 to DSM 6.0-8754. This is where I really starred at the screen almost without blinking. I was now on the version 6 of DSM!

So, I continued updating the DSM to the latest version. This is from DSM 6.0.3-8754 to DSM 6.1.3-15152. And the final update from DSM 6.1.3-15152 to DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 5. Now I have my DS410j, running the current latest DSM at the time of this post, believing it’s a DS411j.

The hardware looks completely identical on the two boxes and looking at the Marvell specifications, the chip is designed to operate at 1 to 1,2 GHz. So, I am not worried. At this point, I was curious and wanted to experiment a little before I started loading it with data. Hi, today I bricked my DS408 trying to flash it into a DS409+ (almost the same CPU). Before I read your post. The flash went smoothly, but after rebooting, the blue blinking led of death was here!

After several readings and researches on the internet, I managed to hack into the u-boot using a serial connection. By the way, the console connector is labelled JP1 on my DS408.

The pin numbering is as follow: 1 2 3 4 5 6 I only used pins 2, 4 and 6 (2=GND, 4=TX - connected to RX on the TTL module, 6=RX - connected to TX on the TTL module) I used putty with a serial connection on port COM3, speed = 115200 I managed to 'inject' a kernel image and a initrd ram file using the following commands.
